How are the public restrooms in Thailand?

I am planning a trip to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. I am curious about the public restrooms in Thailand. If they are clean, have actual toilets or have toilet paper.
The reason I ask is I went on a trip to China and their public restrooms were pretty horrendous. They rarely had actual toilets. They were usually horizontal troughs or urinals built into the ground and you have to squat over a hole that usually had no flushing system, urine all over the floor, an overwhelming nauseating stench, sometimes no stalls or doors and of course, no toilet paper! LOL
So I’m curious if Thailand has a better system.

You’ll find both the same sort of set-up and you’ll find clean, modern facilities. It will depend upon where you are when the need arises. If you stay close to the major tourist spots, chances are you’ll be OK. And if you end up having to use a more traditional toilet, at least there will be porcelain steps for your feet. You picked the premium tourist locales to visit, so you should be OK. To be on the safe side, you would be wise to carry some toilet paper with you at all times. Thailand is a beautiful country whose natives are the hardiest, most party-hardy people you’ll find. I envy you the trip. Need a translator?

    what kinda question is that?

They tend to range from good, to really, really bad (Chinese standard) depending on where you are.

In most of the main tourist spots they are better, because you can always find a McDonalds or Baskin Robins or other western company that has western standards of hygiene, but if you’re going to be travelling by bus or train anywhere, be prepared for pretty basic conditions.

I had an experience when they dont even have water in the public restrooms and the smell was awful. My advice is take some little pack of tissue paper ,hand sanitizer and some mini body spray(in case the toilet smells) in your bag,it comes handy. At nicer hotels and restaurants obviously they are very clean especially around touristy" area.I hope you will have fun in Thailand ,because I always did.

Im from thailand but i have to say this, if ur not in the good resturants, department store or good hotels, the public restrooms are not as good as other developed countries for sure.
Some of them do not provide toilet papers. if u go to big cities like u named above, it should be ok. However, im sure, thailand has better system than china, i have been there once (no offence) :D have fun in thailand!

Never met any public toilets in Thailand.
But the shopping-centres have nice toilets – at least in Bangkok where I live.

Same conditions like in China except it’s more entertainment – due to the hot and humid tropical weather conditions in Thailand you may idle away your time in the toilets by squishing cockroaches, bugs, doormice and rats with your hand or foot; and if you are lucky sometimes even a scorpion or a snake.

at major tourist location your find clean western style toilets. however, anywhere else, it depends on who owns the facility and how well they maintain them, they are the same style as in china but i believe a little cleaner but no toilet paper. My girl friend always carries tissue with her. I’m just glad I am a guy.

not to bad, but bring toilet paper in your purse, just in case.
    They are trying to improve.

Toilets in Thailand are well taken care of, especially in hotels, restaurants. It is more modern and decent than China’s. So you need not worry. And most of the public ones may have an attendant to keep te toilets clean. You need not worry too much. Just have a good and enjoyable holiday in Thailand.

You quickly learn where decent toilets are. Most major tourist attractions have "American" toilets. Always a good idea to carry TP or little packets of kleenex in your pocket or purse.

Airport, major hotels, malls and American fast food places usually have okay bathrooms.
