Thailand away from the sex and drink scene, what places to visit for respectful travelers?

Hi, me and my friend are thinking of going to Thailand, but we really want to avoid the whole crazy sex and drinking scene. What places can you recommend , we like traveling around countries etc. Also is it safe in Thailand to travel away from the main tourist parts?

Regarding dodgy and drinking scenes, you can avoid some certain spots and events i.e. Pattaya, Bangkok (Nana, Patpong), Phuket (Patong) and Ko Phangan (Full Moon Party).

For beaches visit Hua Hin, Ko Samet, Ko Chang, Krabi, Ko Lanta, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Samui.
For diving visit Ko Tao, Ko Similan.
For mountain and trekking visit Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Khao Yai National Park.
For historical site visit Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Kanchanaburi, etc.

It’s still safe to travel away from main tourist parts in Thailand. Like other countries in the world, you must be careful and stay alert while travelling around unknown places.

    Welcome to Thailand :)

Just about everywhere in Thailand will suit you. Just don’t go to the few places catering to nightlife for foreigners. Avoid Pattaya, 3 streets in BKK, one street in Phuket, one street in Koh Samui. You won’t see any of that stuff unless you go looking for it. I think you are falling for the misconception that Thailand is a huge brothel. It is NOT and Thai people are more conservative socially than most westerners.
Thailand is very safe to travel, you might avoid the southern provinces where the muslims want to live in Malaysia, but other than that the worst that is likely to happen is some sneak thievery.

It always amazes me how people who have never been to Thailand think its a sleezy place – how insulting to the good people of Thailand.
Thailand is safe as long as you respect Thai people and do not insult them, cheat them, steal from them or do Drugs.
Thailand is safer than the streets of Brighton.
Place to Recommend would be Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai, Bangkok and Ao Nang, Krabi but there are so many other places to see.
Avoid Pattaya if you do not like to party.
look up tripadvisor for reviws and what to see and do.

Hi MoJo, just one more thing to add, and probably for anyone who doesn’t know. When in Thailand, you are doing something seriously wrong, or people think you’ve done it, put your hands together in the front, bow down a little and say: Pom Kor Tod Krup, meaning I am sorry. Look sad, don’t smile. It puts an end to 99% of conflicts (except drugs, and crimes).

To exclude whole areas of Bangkok (like Sukhumvit and Patpong) just because there are some bars around is kind of stupid. Thousands of people walk by bars every day and are never forced into one. There are lots of good hotels in the Sukhumvit Road area in all price ranges. Lots of street vendors, malls, travel agencies for tours and good restaurants too! You have a very popular night market in the Patpong area too. To exclude these areas means you also miss a lot of other things. You also lose the advantage of using the Skytrain overhead rail service. The Skytrain can be used to connect you to many areas in the city. Are you really afraid that your men will stray? If they stray in Thailand they probably have strayed at home too! You can’t live in a bubble your whole life!

Bangkok will probably be safer than your own capital city. Take normal precautions that you would if you were traveling in strange cities in your country. Use the Skytrain or meter taxi cabs. There are gem scams, tuk-tuk scams to look up on the internet. Tuk-tuks cost more than meter taxi cabs, by the way. When you use a taxi in Bangkok only use the meter, the meter fare is cheaper than bargaining the ride. The price you pay for a meter taxi covers everyone you can stuff in safely – not per person!

Here is my recommendation – visit Bangkok and get a hotel near the Skytrain route. Take some tours when you are in Bangkok to other areas like Bridge on the River Kwai, Ayuthaya and an evening dinner cruise. You can get tours from local travel agencies, there are lots of them around. Find a tour one day and leave the following morning. You can head up to Chiang Mai, perhaps take an evening sleeper train and save paying for a night in a hotel. In Chiang Mai you can get tours from local travel agencies too. Visit the Long Neck Women, see the Golden Triangle area, visit with elephants and night market. Spend the last night in Bangkok before you fly home.

If you need recommendations for hotel rooms mention how much you want to pay per night to narrow down the suggestions you get. Helpful travel forums you can look over. Read up on how to get a taxi from the airport and local transportation.

Here are some travel forums you can look over for additional info.

Go to your local library, check out some books on Thailand. Plan your budget. Figure out how much per night you can afford for a hotel. Hotels in Thailand with air start around 600 baht for Bangkok. A place between 1000 baht and 2000 baht is not that bad. All with air, hot water, TV and private toilet/shower.

    Good luck.

Wanna get away? On my last trip to Thailand I found myself in Tak, located just a bit south of Chiang Mai. No one spoke English, and my Thai is weak. I had a great time. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I never felt safer anywhere else in the country.
The hotel where I stayed is called the Kaloy. There is a coffee shop next door with great espresso. I went to the Wat for a massage. I played snooker at some other hotel (forget the name). Sunsets on the river. Jazzercise after sunset. It was………..bucolic.

I really recommend you do a bicycle tour. Afterwards you have a completely different opinion about Thais and Bangkok.
